The Art of Whisky Distillation

Distillation is the heart of whisky production, turning fermented grain into a refined spirit ready for maturation. Although the concept of distillation is simple, mastering the process requires knowledge, precision, and years of experience.

The process begins with grains such as barley, corn, rye, or wheat. These grains are milled, mashed with water, and fermented using yeast to produce a liquid known as wash. This wash contains alcohol and various flavor compounds that will later influence the character of the whisky.

During distillation, the wash is heated in copper stills. As the liquid heats, alcohol vapors rise and are collected before being cooled back into liquid form. Distillers carefully separate the different portions of the distilled spirit, keeping only the most desirable part known as the “heart.”

Copper stills play an important role in refining the spirit. The metal helps remove unwanted compounds and contributes to a smoother and cleaner taste. Every distillery uses slightly different still shapes and distillation techniques, which helps create the unique identity of their whisky.

Distillation is therefore not just a technical process but a delicate balance between science and craftsmanship.
